  1. You might not know my friend, but in Greece, the open palm like this is a highly offensive gesture, akin to giving someone a curse. They say its from ancient times but I cannot verify that.
In any case, it makes browsing Planet Ubuntu, a bit, uneasy. :)

Aristotelis: thanks for letting me know. Rest assured that none of this was intended. I’ll make sure to pick different representations of “5″ to promote https://wiki.ubuntu.com/5-A-Day further. :-)

    Efharisto!

Aristoteli, don’t you think you are exaggerating? It is clear that the photo is depicting a person trying to block the camera not someone making gestures! This in my greek eyes is not offensive at all given the context and the face expression; it is not a “mountza”. :)

Even so, I vividly remember an occasion on my first weeks in the UK, asking in a restaurant for two glasses of orange juice using the rotated “Victory” sign which is of the same if not wost league of offense in the UK… It was… interesting to say the least. :D

My Melbourne friends (Melbourne, in Australia, is the largest Greek city outside Greece, apparently) have told me of so many different hand gestures that are offensive in Greece, that I’m starting to think they made them all up and that, for example, the one that they say means “your mother does favours for sailors” really just means “waiter, can we have the bill please”. It’s good to see independent confirmation of at least one of them… unless Aristotelis is fooling you too…

This is called “moutza” in greeks. It is not the baddest thing that someone can do to you :P It is usually accompanied by the words “parta na min sta xrostao” which means “take them for not owning you”. For me, seeing this photo (and for the 99% of greeks) it is not something that will offense me, but something that will make me laugh :) Don’t forget that greek people are funny people and I think aristotelis is too;) So yes I am on the moutza-a-day :P Finally I find excellent this idea, something that ubuntu really needs…
